Ralph Lauren & the Mercedes-Benz SSK

This is the Mercedes-Benz SSK, built between 1928 and 1932. With a top speed of 120 mph (190 km/hr) it was the fastest car of the late 1920s, and most of the forty or so that were produced (yes, so few!), were used as racing cars and destroyed that way. Now there are only four or five remaining with totally original parts, and around 100 replicas with parts from original vehicles. Wiki informs me a 1929 model auctioned at Bonhams in 2004 sold for 4.17 million GBP (around US$7.4 million). That makes it the second most expensive motor vehicle ever sold in history.

Ralph Lauren has in his private collection a 1930 model known as the Trossi Roadster, which he had meticulously restored and flaunts a pretty dramatic body. It’s a Batmobile if ever I saw one. Read about this wild car here.

I usually don’t like to double up with SwingFashionista.com but I just HAVE to re-blog some images from Elisa Palomino’s Fall 2010 RTW collection, that Jo posted.Â Who is Elisa Palomino? Though her own label is a new thing, she’s no newcomer to the fashion scene.Â She has been the designer behind Moschino’s Cheap & Chic collections, and the head of the John Galliano studio, during which time she also worked for Dior. She was studio director at Cavalli and is now the Vice-president of Design at Diane Von Furstenberg. Serious credentials! She’s also a 1920s style enthusiast and a collector of vintage Japanese kimonos, as you can see.Â Elisa is the lady with the long, straight black hair in a few of these pics…

Tango: En Tus Brazos

I’m down in Buenos Aires right now, and can’t help but be swept up in the Tango here. I’m truly terrible, but thankfully my Lindy Hop skillz mean that the Tango leads can at least whisk me around the floor and let me pretend I know what the hell I’m doing.Â Anyway, I stumbled across this heartwrenching animated short, entitled “En Tus Brazos” (In Your Arms). Set in the 1920s, it tells the tale of a famous tango dancer struck down by a tragic accident. The creators are actually French and it’s from way back in 2005. Directed by FranÃ§ois-Xavier Goby, Edouard Jouret and Matthieu Landour.
